Bollywood recommendations

I have been super busy for the last few years (aren't all actuarial students?), and I haven't been watching Hindi films much. But I just joined an online movie club, and now DVD rentals are delivered to me at home. Can anyone recommend REALLY GOOD bollywood movies that I've missed over the last 5 years? The only new movies I saw in that time were Mohabbatein, Lagaan, Bhagban, and Kal Ho Na Ho. What else should I rent? (Please don't list movies that are just okay. I don't want to spend 3 hours to watch so-so movies.)

Thanks!

I didn't see Devdas on your list! What about Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham? Kuch Kuch hota hai...Bunty aur Babli is a new one, haven't seen it though, but the songs are great...

Hope you didn't watch those movies already!

I remember bits of some of the older ones mentioned but I generally fell asleep in the theatre every Saturday night as my parents sat through another 3 hour epic since it was cheaper to take me than pay for a sitter.

My wife bought a DVD filled with songs recently for our 4 year old daughter to watch and boy were we shocked at the overt sexuality. If only I had know, I would have tried much harder to stay awake when I was younger.

My taste these days runs to cross over Indian films such as Hollywood/Bollywood or Dude, where's the party.

thanks, SykoChikka, i forgot about Devdas - i'll add it to the list. others are already on the list, and Bunty aur Babli should be arriving in the mail today. i'll let you know how i like it.

Parshva, i appreciate your making so many suggestions!!! although, i have to admit, i have seen a few of those and thought they were either horrible (joggers park) or at least very generic (mujhse dosti karoge). but i'll try the ones that you listed as "must see" and i do think the oldies you listed are real classics, definitely worth seeing again.

i saw Kuch Kuch Hota Hai when it came out and loved it, esp. the songs. since joining this club, the only indian film i have seen is Kal Ho Na Ho. again, loved the movie and really, really loved the songs.

i don't know where you are located, but please share if any other movies become hits in india. i'm in the u.s., in case that wasn't already obvious.

I know very little about Bollywood, but since older movies have come up, I will chime in that I absolutely loved Kudah Gawah, and the music in it. I think it is from the early 90's. Just in case that's one you haven't seen. Also, just in case you are not Indian and/or have not seen them, you should check out the works of non-Bollywood Satyajit Rey.

I, respectfully, disagree on some. Munna Bhai MBBS, even tho it was funny, while I was watching it I was like, are you guys serious? The songs weren't that good..it was funny, so watch it if you want something light to watch...you'll definately get some good laughs outta it...but I don't think it's that gr8 of a movie....

Paheli looks realllly good though, I haven't watched it yet, the songs sound good. Anyone seen Dus? How's that?

indian-actuary 09-21-2005 01:06 AM

paheli is mega stupid! though if u r a fan of shah rukh khan, then u may want to watch it... its got a ridiculous story.....

dus is not too bad... they've tried to make it like a hollywood flick with all kinds of stunts, situations. i did like the way they have shot the film... its a sorta cross between 'the usual suspects' & a regular bollywood film.
its worth a watch.

also heres are some of the movies that u really dont wanna b watching-
1. Kyun Ho Gaya Na- oh my god!!! where d heck is the story????
2. style; xcuse me- not a good idea unless ur into silly slap-stick humour
3. any movie that has tusshar kapoor in it!

some good ones-
1. sarkar- very interesting... apparently based on the life of politician bal thackrey
2. page 3- brilliant flick!
3. kal ho na ho
4. monsoon wedding
