Pokemon Go just came out

Even if you aren't a fan of the Pokemon series of games, the latest installment is interesting to say the least.

It's an augmented reality game developed by the people that made Ingress. As you walk around in the real world you'll encounter Pokemon that you catch or other Pokemon Gyms that you can battle against. The types of Pokemon you will see depends on the location. For example, you will see water-type pokemon when near bodies of water. Someone posted that they encountered a ghost-type pokemon while at a hospital.

There are also "pokestops" all around the world at landmarks. An Australian police department become a popular pokestop shortly after release and posted a message on facebook reminding people they didn't have to actually come in to the police station to get the pokeballs there, just walk by it.

Maybe I'm getting old but I don't really get the appeal to this. I should go outside more

"Gotta catch 'em all!" has different meanings in different contexts.

I think that's part of the creators' motivation. Video games have been blamed for keeping kids indoors, and this will help some people get out.

I liken it to a kind of virtual/augmented reality version of geocaching. :-)

Given Pokemon's appeal to those who may be prone to various neuroses (shy nerds/geeks - keep in mind that Pokemon is the brainchild of an autistic man), I see this game as possibly being helpful to some who might otherwise be confined. I look forward to reading personal interest stories that say as much.

My husband and I went walking through a nearby park after work yesterday hunting Pokémon, and ran into a ton of other people doing the same thing. Really made you feel like you were a part of a moment in history or something. :usa:

When i took my dog for a walk, I saw a bunch of kids running/walking in packs through the park on their phones.

Going outside is all well and good but I hope this doesn't increase auto claim frequency from people doing drive by pokestops
