Learned that from "Archer."

I mean, all this defensive posturing about religion is kind of derailing the thread.
Or, it's going exactly where the OP wanted it (on the rail and over the cliff).

I'm actually pretty curious where OP was headed, or why he started the thread. Not to discuss whether the Catholic Church is a cult, I'd wager.

See the world burn, or something.

I did ask, early on, what kind of idiots he thinks we are.

I mean, BTTF3 derailed with Doc's love story. Like a cry for help, from the screenwriter, when the train literally went over the cliff.

The OP is the L30 of the Surveys sub-forum.

Well, I can only speak for myself...

Hopefully this gives pause to those of you who doubt the efficacy of tarot.

Tarot is totally efficacious within the mind of those who think it has any sort of power.

Regarding the definition of a cult, I've been seeing the BITE Model getting a lot of attention lately. It's goes more towards whether an organization is harmful rather than whether it is unusual, so is helpful in that regard. The criteria are as follows, with some examples:

Behavior Control
  • Promote dependence and obedience
  • Modify behavior with rewards and punishments
  • Dictate where and with whom you live
  • Restrict or control sexuality
  • Control clothing and hairstyle
  • Regulate what and how much you eat and drink
  • Deprive you of seven to nine hours of sleep
  • Exploit you financially
  • Restrict leisure time and activities
  • Require you to seek permission for major decisions

Information Control
  • Deliberately withhold and distort information
  • Forbid you from speaking with ex-members and critics
  • Discourage access to non-cult sources of information
  • Divide information into Insider vs Outsider doctrine
  • Generate and use propaganda extensively
  • Use information gained in confession sessions against you
  • Gaslight to make you doubt your own memory
  • Require you to report thoughts, feelings, and activities to superiors
  • Encourage you to spy and report on others' "misconduct"

Thought Control
  • Instill Black vs White, Us vs Them, & Good vs Evil thinking
  • Change your identity, possibly even your name
  • Use loaded language and cliches to stop complex thought
  • Induce hypnotic or trance states to indoctrinate
  • Teach thought-stopping techniques to prevent critical thoughts
  • Allow only positive thoughts
  • Use excessive meditation, singing, prayer and chanting to block thoughts
  • Reject rational analysis, critical thinking, and doubt

Emotional Control
  • Instill irrational fears of questioning or leaving the group
  • Label some emotions as evil, worldly, sinful, or wrong
  • Teach emotion-stopping techniques to prevent anger, homesickness
  • Promote feeligns of guilt, shame, and unworthiness
  • Shower you with praise and attention ("love bombing")
  • Threaten your friends and family
  • Shun you if you disobey or disbelieve
  • Teach that there is no happiness or peace outside the group

Some of these aren't necessarily bad, but might warrant critical attention. In this model, some versions of Christianity are worse than others, though most are guilty to some extent of demonizing outsiders and shaming its members. The Catholic Church grants a lot of independence, whereas Jehovah's witnesses are much more hardcore with the shunning and emotional manipulation.

Is magic demonic? From what I understand certain kinds involve using the powers of otherworldly beings, certain kinds are more like psychics. All of them seem like bullshit.

Vorian Atreides 06-25-2019 09:48 AM

So . . . the US Armed Forces might fall under that "definition" of cult. :-P
