Default My Stupid Thought of the Day

Feel free to share your thoughts. This random chain of logic popped in my head this morning.

Cheers takes place in a bar in Boston. Nobody in the bar (at least the regulars, so maybe some cameo/side character happened), speaks like someone from Boston. My first thought then was that Sam played for the Red Sox. Ok, he could have grown up anywhere and just been drafted by the Red Sox and fell in love with the city and the minor celebrity status he got playing pro baseball there. That makes sense to me. However, this doesn't explain the rest of the people. Maybe mailman go to some kind of training and are shipped out to various locations, so maybe Cliff could be from anywhere. Still, too many characters without a Bostonian accent.

So, my logic was, is Cheers a bar for people living in Boston that aren't from Boston? And is it hated by real Bostonians? So, they "boycott" it, because it's not a real Boston bar?

I am not from Boston, but I went there once. I think maybe it was just the sign on the outside that matched the show but the bar inside was completely different. So I bought a souvenir glass and went about my day.

In the earlier episodes many of the patrons sported "Bostonian" accents. Cliff's was much more pronounced then, too. He was originally only supposed to be a recurring character rather than a member of the ensemble. (Norm, too)

Yes, Cliff accent was much stronger at first ("Hey, Nah'my"). I thought he kept somewhat of what was supposed to be a Boston accent. And the Paul character, who was a regular but with not as much screen time as the others, had a Boston accent.

I guess they got the cast they wanted and didn't want to try to do it with a bunch of fake accents. I'd rather them not have accents than have terrible ones.

I believe it's based on the Bull & Finch pub, and since that became a tourist hangout since the show came on then it would make sense for Bostonians not to like it. And not everyone who lives in Boston has that "smaht pahk" accent - lots of people who grew up around there talk normally.

Carla spoke more like a New Yorker, IMO. Still could be believable.

But I think the main idea behind the show was to be an "every-man" type show, so they wanted characters people could relate to . . . which might've necessitated the characters having a more "neutral" accent.

Frasier's accent sounds like it's from the upper class of New England
