Or does platelet supply only come from platelet-specific donations?
Not sure if there was another response. Did platelets today at NIH. Whole blood is provided to people as whole blood. Not enough platelets. Only takes 7-15 mins. Platelets take 75-100 mins where blood goes out one arm, spun and much is returned to you through other arm. Itís a commitment but the donations are down. Cancer patients in particular need platelets. 3 weeks ago there were no others there during my time and today nobody was there when I arrived and 2 other ultimately came in. Today was platelets and red blood cells only.

Donate if you can.

Yeah, it took me about 2 hours last time (it's fine, I'm scheduling it on Saturday), and you can do platelet donations every three days. Plasma is every four weeks. Whole blood is every eight weeks.

One can do a double red blood cell donation (I have a friend who usu does that) - that's every 16 weeks.

The center I was making appointments at does get booked up for plasma/platelets - even now. That said, they have been aggressively calling donors, because perhaps after that first spurt, they're concerned people won't be coming back
