Already a lot of posturing from both sides. My guess is that a deal is not imminent, and probably won't get done until a work stoppage looks likely.

the players should hold out, but they won't. the union has been warning them to save their money for at least a year now because of this upcoming battle. it's unlikely that most of them saved, especially since not all of them are millionaires

Can we use the basketball lockout from around 10 years ago as an indicator of what will happen? I think the players lost their leverage very quickly to the owners that time. This should be worse, unless the player's union can get the media/fans on their side early.

I think the players are relatively fine with the 17 games and expanded playoffs. The NFL has been floating this for a long time. There are some other aspects of the proposal that probably need to go. Some weird $250k cap on what players can get paid for the extra game. And 10 years may be too long.

Because he can't miss 1/2 a game.

Why not use the NFL player strikes itself?

Agree that the players can never hold out too long, but even taking it to the brink gives them a little bargaining room. That's what usually seems to happen in the NFL.

What incentive is there for any player already on a guaranteed contract to agree to a 17th game?

Of course he can - it's entirely possible that he could injure his knee while trotting off to the locker room during halftime.

There is a salary bonus of 1/17 with a cap of 250k if they make the change.

Also the general revenue sharing that an extra game gives higher revenues->higher caps-> higher salaries...in addition to the 48% to 48.5% increase.
