So I recently booked a trip and they sent me an email to persuade me to buy the travel insurance. Among the reasons they listed why we should do this:

Quote:
30%-50% of travelers stateside and abroad will become ill or injured during their trip.
wtf. why would anyone go anywhere? I may not be the best actuary that ever lived but that seems a tad high

How do you even underwrite insurance with a 50% incidence rate?

I'm sure that the "fact" includes "illness/injury" that do not impact any travel plans/arrangements.

Might also include numbers when visiting nearby relatives (that again, don't really impact travel plans/arrangements).

Agree with your other statements regarding a company actually underwriting events with that expected rate of "incidence" . . . But what would the cost really be if an "impacting" event actually had that rate of occurrence.

Become ill or injured during their trip <> making a claim?

I often get a cold when traveling, at least in part because my allergies act up when I'm in a different environment which makes my head a living petri dish for whatever is floating through the air. I may very well fall into that category of becoming ill.

Or there's a "time frame deductible" where you have to be impaired for more than x number of days before coverage is in effect.

http://www.burschtravel.com/travel-r...s/travel-tips/

&

http://www.superiortrvl.com/cancel.htm <-- not an active link, just from the google search results

are stating the same thing.

Obviously, they got the number from some source and plastered it out there.

It's almost as bad as saying that you're going to save up to 15% or more on car insurance.

Illness and injury aren't the only covered events either. Also covers canceled flights (even for natural disasters or terrorism), lost bags, forgotten medication, and economic hardship. So we may be up to 75% here.
