I'm in an active outbreak area. There's community transmission, not enough test kits, and some local hospitals are rationing protective equipment. So, I'm going to have different thoughts on what's correct.

What I'm doing is to WFH for the rest of the month (that was decided by my employer, though), have enough food/ibuprofen/acetaminophen for my family so we wouldn't have to go out for a couple of weeks if sick, not visiting our 80+ year old parents, shopping less frequently and at less busy times, stopped going to the gym (although it's probably fine), more cognizant of what I touch, and wash/sanitize my hands more often, particularly after being out and about. I try to go to my brother's oncology appointments with him, but he's restricted to bringing only one person with him, and I figure that spot goes to his wife.

My kids are still going to school, but they've reported that there's dwindling numbers of kids, with some classes with over half the kids gone. Some are home due to overanxious parents, but others are home due to an ill family member (supposed to stay home for 2 weeks if someone in the household has a flu-like illnesses), or being at-risk/have a high-risk family member.

Disagree. As Actuaries we have a responsibility to promote a responsible response to this Pandemic.

Thats how we view this in the UK on a professional level.

How does what I did make things worse for society at the margins?

It was preventative, and most likely the correct action given that Brazil has 35 cases (only 3 in Rio) and the UK is close to 400 (and climbing).

So everything I did was "responsible".

More details on New Rochelle, NY situation:

National Guard deployed.
1 mile radius "containment area" set up
Large gathering places are closed for two weeks - schools, temples, churches, etc

It's unclear what other type of containment will occur.
