Default "New" Board Games

The wife and I just bought "Ticket to Ride", "Odin's Ravens", and "Power Grid" for our anniversary. We know Ticket to Ride is great from playing online, but has anyone played the other two? They came highly recommended. We're going to set aside time this weekend to give them a whirl.

hi again otley
never heard of odin's ravens.
power grid is a very tough game. very difficult money management. especially in some of the expansion maps (italy). the expansions add a fair bit of different strategies (in that you use different resources, different power plants are available, etc) - this will make more sense once you read the rules. board game geek should have a pdf if you want to read them before you open the game (see my sig for the link)

We got "Ticket to Ride" recently as well, and enjoy it a lot.

Can the other 2 games be played with just 2 people? That's the constraint we run into a lot with games....

technically, yes. (well, power grid can, i dunno about the other.)
but - a 2p grid is significantly different from a 4+ player grid. (3 is a different game from both of them)
ETA: and i mean that in a bad way. i don't like a 2p game of grid, and usually won't play. (unless that's the only game available).

Any other recommendations for good 2 player games that have the potential to be expanded to 3/4/5 players?

(And I'm not looking for "technically it works for 2 players, but it's not that great" game - Killer Bunnies seems to fit in that group.)

no. for the most part they don't exist. i honestly can't think of a game that is good with 2 but can be played with more than 2.

One of our favorites is a relatively obscure one called Monkeys On The Moon, which we bought only because we loved the name. It's a fun auction-based game but with some rather unique rules. The two-player variant is a much different game, as most auction-based games are, and not quite as fun as playing with four, but still fun.

I think "Ticket to Ride" fits in this category - it's a different game with fewer people, but still a lot of fun. Other than that so far...
