(not sure that reference holds together, having not actually read the book, but it's gotta be close enough, eh?)

To clarify, I'm staying the next two days regardless. Just wondering how annoying companies usually are about expecting flexibility in your travel plans.

i would say no.

Depends on how annoying your travel plans are. If you'd need to take a red-eye, I think it would be routine to expect you'd stay the night and fly back the next morning. If you could be home by 8:00, you'd be expected to fly back that day.
If you could be home by 10:30, grey area. If you worked for me and asked if you could fly back the next day, I'd probably okay it but not without a conversation (which would start with the question "if you weren't planning to stay anyway, would you be coming back that night or the next day") and possibly not without some internal grumblings (existence and size of grumblings highly dependent on whether you made a habit of pushing the boundaries of company procedures to see what you could get away with).

I would never willingly return home that late, especially after a long day of total boredom in a different time zone (it would feel like 11:30 based on when I got up, and it's another 30 minutes or so home from the airport). But I've known since the beginning that I was paying for the other two nights myself. The company is, however, going to pay for me to get a snack that day since they'd be paying for airport dinner if I were flying back that night.
