Default P&C Reserving Actuary - CUNA Mutual Group - Madison, WI

The position supports Corporate Actuarial and has significant freedom to conduct reserving analyses and develop solutions to actuarial issues. Responsibilities include analyzing and recommending reserve levels for assigned business units, communicating conclusions of analyses to business partners, leading other impactful projects to help drive business results, and managing a small staff. The position requires the ability to think critically, to communicate complex analyses and conclusions to business leaders articulately, and to assist those leaders in taking appropriate actions to meet company financial objectives. This position has regular interaction with departments outside of Corporate Actuarial including Claims, Finance, Business Protection, and Legal as well as external audiences such as outside consultants in support of financials or audits.

Job Responsibilities:

• Set assumptions and oversee reserving studies, analyze and interpret financial results, and communicate to product leadership for Business Protection, International, and Exit products.
• Set expectations for actuarial model capabilities; identify model data needs and available sources.
• Advance stochastic reserving and variability work to better understand reserve volatility; recommend and oversee implementation of framework.
• Evaluate efficacy of current reserving methodologies and processes.
• Support Corporate Actuarial evaluation of corporate reinsurance structure and catastrophe provisions.
• Coordinate Corporate Actuarial work in support of the Long Term Value initiative.
• Identify and quantify corporate risks to enhance understanding of the drivers of corporate results. Support quantification of ORSA and enterprise risk.
• Develop new and creative solutions to actuarial issues.
• Conduct independent analyses, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
• Serve as actuarial viewpoint expert in a wide variety of actuarial subjects, and in company, industry and regulatory practices.
• Provide effective interaction with leadership of underwriting, claims product, and other units as required by particular project.
• Provide effective interaction with external audiences in support of audits.
• Impacts the achievement of customer, operational, project or service objectives; work is guided by functional projects.
• Communicates difficult concepts and negotiates with others to persuade a different point of view.

Job Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, statistics, mathematics or a related field
2. Six-plus years of experience in actuarial setting with progressive responsibilities
3. FCAS Level or equivalent
4. Broad knowledge of insurance operations, products, and emerging issues.
5. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences in an informal setting.
6. Ability to interact with other functional areas as required.
7. Ability to pay attention to detail, produce accurate results and develop self-validation skills.
8. Strong organization and time management skills.
9. Ability to handle multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
10. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
11. Ability to develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
