Default ASA & APC

I wish the SOA would create a better solution for the cancelled APCs. I was scheduled to attend the April APC but am now scheduled to attend the September APC. It is my last requirement for ASA. I'm going to be missing out on six months of ASA raise as well as a delayed bonus... Also, who knows how many more APCs will be cancelled due to COVID.

I think the best solution would be for the SOA to award APC credit to those who were affected by the cancelled APCs with the caveat that the student must attend an APC within a year (or something). If the student does not fulfill that requirement, his or her credentials would be removed/suspended/etc. I can't really think of a downside; students aren't having their credentials delayed and the SOA still gets in-person APC. I can't really imagine that after exams, VEEs, and modules that the APC is absolutely necessary to give meaning to the ASA credential. Thoughts?

APC is the ethics unit. Since you can't imagine its necessity, you now have evidence of its necessity.

For APC and FAC, they should figure out online solutions.

I don't think they need people to be physically in the room for what is done in those sessions.

Allow me to rephrase my disappointment. I can't imagine that the case studies presented in a six-hour live session instill ethical knowledge that cannot be conveyed virtually. I am not saying the APC need not exist.

To me, delaying candidates' attainment of credentials because of the perceived necessity of an in-person discussion on ethics during a pandemic comes across as tone-deaf. Until a vaccine is developed, effective treatment is found, or herd immunity is attained, asking hundreds of individuals to fly around the country to convene for such a discussion seems ill-conceived, especially by an organization of risk professionals.

Did you write to the SOA with this opinion?

I highly recommend doing so.

How would the SOA justify the outrageous APC fee for a virtual course?
