Default Join the SOA Modeling Section!

We do have a separate thread on this here (http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actu...d.php?t=279417), but thought I'd do an "official" promo.

Just got an email from the SOA -- in 3 days, we've signed up 64 members for the new modeling section... it takes 200 to push us over the top and become a real boySOA interest section!

Info on the new modeling section is here:
https://www.soa.org/Professional-Int...ng-detail.aspx

Someone had a very good question in the other thread, and I'll copy the Q&A here:

The point of creating the modeling section is that there are certain shared aspects of modeling that cut across multiple sections. There is already modeling-related content in (among other sections): Joint Risk Management Section, Futurism Section, Technology Section

Modeling is becoming a bit more involved with increasing regulatory requirements (ORSA, SolvencyII) and changing accounting standards (IFRS/FASB changes ongoing) that -- and some of us who had this idea for the new section had been in a Modeling Efficiency Work Group at the SOA, and really frustrated that we couldn't get anything useful done there (don't want to get into that now).

At this point, we do need to get more people involved other than the interim section council/planning committee because some of the stuff we want to do:
- newsletter
- meeting sessions
- webinars
- sponsor research (to feed back into webinars & meeting sessions)

I want to pull some of the Academy work MEWG did into the SOA (namely, the modeling efficiency bibliography/resource guide).

Some people join sections because they'd like to support the specific activities, which gives a signal to the type of continuing ed & research members want to support.

Support modeling!

Those are my specific ideas, but we're looking for more people with more ideas to help us get this off the ground! We're still in early days for volunteers, but if you contact me (PM or email:marypat.campbell@gmail.com), I will put you in the contact list for followup (I'm the Secretary of the interim section council, and I'm keeping these records).

But first we need to become a real section.... join now!

...And I just realized I can search in the Actuarial Directory for section membership, so I don't need to wait for the SOA to email me.

Separately, we're trying to figure out what to name our newsletter.

If you give me a winning name, I'll buy you a beer.

Eventually.

How often is this newsletter coming out? If it's a monthly, you could do the "Modeling Monthly." Other m's-memo, manual, magazine.

Quants Quarterly

You'd get lots more members if the price were, say, $0.

I like The Model Actuary. I'll mention it if we get around to it in the call tomorrow. We'll probably take the discussion to email, tho

It's not going to be more often than quarterly, and the first year (i.e., 2015) we may get only two issues out.
