Why do we still define the rainbow as having 7 colors? Three primary and three secondary colors. End of.

But for some reason, we split purple in half, calling the two resultant colors "indigo", which no one has ever heard of outside of it's rainbonic invention, and violet, which is just another name for purple. Is it just so the nmeumonic device "Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain" works?

I would propose that, in the real world, purple is a different color than violet.

I agree that we can get rid of Indigo. After all, Richard Of York Gave Battle Valiantly.
