Probably not MDs or trial attorneys but doctor and lawyer are both pretty broad terms. Idk anyone with a FSA or FCAS license plate.

No one knows what an actuary is. Everyone knows what a doctor and lawyer is. Doesn't matter how good the job is or how hard to get there.

Barrier of entry? I don't think so. Not for real doctor or real lawyer.

In terms of social recognition, there is no comparison. 99% of Americans have never even heard of the word "actuary." 99% of those who have heard of the word think we're a bunch of socially awkward math nerds. The rest work in the field (note that there may be overlap between the last two groups ).

In terms of sacrifices that are required to make it, actuaries have it 'relatively' easy. As tough as exams are:
No need to go to a top school or graduate school, companies pay exam fees and provide study time, higher job security than lawyers IMO, competitive salaries, low-stress, etc.

In terms of compensation, I don't think actuaries are significantly worse off. Typical doctors and lawyers don't make 500k. Lawyers at top firms and doctors that specialize in $$$ medicine make significantly more than the top same percent of actuaries, but I doubt the medians are so far off, especially if you consider lifetime earnings and net out the additional education debt.

Are you serious? Let me guess your Chinese son is contemplating becoming an actuary and you always dreamed he'd be a doctor. Or lawyer!

Ahead of family practice or pediatrician, ahead of divorce or family law. Behind brain surgeon. Behind corporate lawyer or partner at large firm.
