Default Browncoat's Diversion--the Lathe

So, I was given a lathe almost 2 years ago now, and I'm starting to get to the point where what I'm turning isn't complete crap. This thread will be a place for me to park pix of my stuff and tell y'all a little about it.

One of my first projects. A "weed pot". Made of Walnut which makes the shop smell awesome. Six inches tall.

Also walnut. A four inch bowl that broke when I was turning the bottom. I'll have to take some pics during the process so you get a sense of what's going on. My hand is almost healed from that thing breaking and cutting me.

In addition to smelling nice, walnut also turns very well. Cherry and oak, for example, are tougher to get a nice surface on. But the best thing about walnut, IMO, is the yellow sap wood. This piece shows that off nicely. The bowl is more in focus IRL than in the first pic. Six inches.

The piece also has a bit of spalting (the black lines running through the yellow sapwood). That also makes for a more interesting piece.

I was thinking the term "weed pot" was redundant.

Was this the six inches that you promised you'd give to your wife?

not sure how serious this is for you, or if it's just a hobby. My friend from college does this to supplement his income. He gets hundreds of dollars for each of his bowls. (I seem to remember 400-700 range). when I get home, and if I remember, I'll post his lathe videos.

He doesn't have a web page. I found this by google.

It's a hobby now, but it could evolve. I have to get good first.

I'd be interested to see anything you post on this topic. Thanks!
