My first chess set when I was a kid was played on a mat on the floor with 4"x4" squares. The king was 12" tall. I used the pieces as inspiration for the chess pieces here. The (original) pawn was about 4" tall, the one I turned is closer to 5". The rook and the bishop are both a little taller and need a little more work. The bishop needs the groove cut in his hat, and the rook needs turrets cut out of the top. In the pics, you can see that the also need the excess wood cut off the bottom. That's been done since the pics were taken.

Made of pear wood.

Another weed pot, this one out of cedar, which is interesting to turn. The outer wood fractures quite easily and you have to get through it to get to good turning wood underneath. Even then, it cracks easily. I got the log this came from a year ago, and turned a top right away, which cracked 20 minutes after I took it off the lathe. After having dried in my garage for a year, it seems to be more stable. BTW, my shop smells great for 2 days after turning cedar!

I don't know if you can tell, but this piece also has some yellow sap wood on the one side.

Also BTW, cracking occurs because the outside dries faster than the inside. Some ways to combat this are to wrap the piece in brown paper to slow the drying process altogether. Pack it in layers and layers of its own shavings for the same reason. Soak the project in denatured alcohol, which mixes with the water, and for some reason, reduces cracking.

This is a small (5") maple plate I made. It was my first plate, and I don't hate it. It looks particularly good under a 4" wide candle, which it's just occurring to me, I should have put on it before I took the pic. Maybe I'll retake the pic next time I have a bunch of stuff to take pics of.

Also, I shouldn't take the pic from directly above. Note to self.

BTW, you should make the king and queen anatomically correct.

Also, you should turn yourself a holy grail. Out of cedar or walnut, IMO.

I have a small goblet I turned. It's not very good, but I'll post a pic eventually.

I really like the plate. I'd love to be able to do stuff like this, but I just don't have enough patience.

although I think it's more 'free time' that I lack rather than patience... maybe once I get done with exams I can give it a try.

Have you ever thought of trying to make a pool cue BC?

I have not thought of a pool cue. If I were a good player, I would rather buy one.
