Default SERENITY Now! RPG

This is the play thread for the debut run of SERENITY Now!, a role playing game in the style of ACTION Castle. This thread contains the initial discussion. Please note that due to the number of IDs wanting to play, this game will be run twice. If you plan on playing the second game, you should not read/participate in this thread.

What is an ACTION Castle! type role playing game, you ask. Check out past games:

ACTION Castle! (modded by Anthemyst)
ACTION Caste II! (modded by Anthemyst)
Spooky Manor (modded by Browncoat)

Players will proceed in the order listed in Post 2. Each player will have three actions, which must be posted in bold to count. "Teleporting" rules are in effect, as are anti-talking overboard rules. A player who delays the game greater than an hour will be passed and may jump in when s/he returns to keyboard.

Wow, five years of development time for this game. I really hope it lives up to those lofty expectations.

You have just booked passage from the planet Boros to the moon of Whitefall aboard a Mid-bulk Transport ship colloquially known as a Firefly. The pretty girl that convinced you to fly with them shows you where your room is, and takes you up to the Dining Room for a pre-departure briefing. There are a three other people in the room, sitting on a couch in the sitting area. Two of them are clearly a couple, sitting close together and holding hands, the third is an older gentleman with white hair pulled in a tight pony tail. He wears a shepherd’s collar and has a pleasant smile. She introduces you to the couple as Chris, who looks to be about 35, and his wife, Michael, who is perhaps 30. The shepherd rises and shakes your hand, calling himself “Book”. You sit and exchange a few pleasantries with them until a ruggedly handsome man enters with an impressive looking black woman.

“Welcome aboard Serenity. I’m Captain Reynolds, this is my first officer, Zoe. I see you’ve met Kaylee and the shepherd. You’ll meet the rest of the crew on the way. It’ll take us about a week to hit Whitefall, but we gotta make a quick stop on Ares to make a pick up.” You recognize “Ares” as the name of one of the moons of Boros, the planet you remember from the preceding paragraph. “Meals are taken here in the dining room, three of ‘em a day. You’re welcome to visit here and rummage through the cabinets any time, though. Other than here and your quarters, though, the rest of the ship--bridge, engine room, cargo bay--is off-limits without an escort. But if you need anything, feel free to flag one of us down; we’ll help you get squared away. Kaylee may even get a game of Rim Ball going in the Cargo Bay later.”

“Captain Reynolds?” It’s Chris speaking. “I noticed when I was putting our bags in our room that the room is, well, it’s a little small, if you don’t mind my saying. My wife and I are on our way to Whitefall as sort of a honeymoon, you see, and I was hoping we might be able to find a larger room on board.”

Before the captain can respond, a young woman, perhaps a teen, enters from the Fore Corridor, looking agitated. She has longish scraggly dark hair, and she’s looking mostly at her bare feet as she walks towards where you’re sitting. She’s muttering loudly to herself. “Electrons are important. If you’re missing an electron, you’re an ion. It’s dangerous and unstable.” She reaches the sitting area and looks up, seemingly surprised to see so many people there. She looks at Mal, quizzically. Mal, used to her eccentricities, smiles. “I’m missing an electron,” she informs him.

Mal opens his mouth to respond, but thinks better of what he has to say, shaking his head. “Uh, River,” says the shepherd, starting to stand, “Why don’t you--“

“It’s missing!” she interrupts. She stomps out of the room rubbing her head and muttering about her missing electron.

“So, that’s River,” Mal says. He smiles to smooth over the situation. “She’s harmless. Her brother is the doctor on this boat. You’ll meet him later. So…was that it?” He tries to remember what he was saying before River interrupted.

“No, I was asking about larger quarters. Maybe something a little more…private?”

“Right. Sorry. Passenger dorms are all we have to offer you. You were told that when you came aboard.”

“No, I know. But I noticed from the outside you’ve got a shuttle docked, and I thought maybe we could rent that out for the trip. We’d be happy to pay a little extra for it.”

Mal regards him. “I’m afraid not. The shuttle is off limits to passengers.” He pauses, and the matter seems to have dropped. “Okay.” He walks over to communication relay on the wall and presses a button. “Wash? We ready to go?”

A voice crackles over the system, “Yes, indeed. Jayne just locked the front door, pre-flight is complete. Whenever you’re ready, Mal.”

Before long, the crew departs, leaving you, Chris and Michael, and Book in the sitting area. The voice intercom continues to crackle and you hear the footsteps of the captain and Zoe ascend the stairs to the bridge, both from down the hallway and from the intercom. A few overheard words and the sound of a kiss tell you that Zoe must be involved with the pilot in some fashion. “Oops,” says the shepherd as he stands. “The captain forgot to turn off the intercom.” He walks to it and presses a button. The noise does not stop. “Nope, that must be the mute,” he says. He clicks another button and the machine goes silent. “Ahh.” He smiles, and takes his seat.

You hear the engines roar to life, and feel the ship ascend, and you watch pleasantly through the windows above your head as the atmo turns to black.

You’re in the Dining Room. Book, Chris, and Michael are here. There is protein here. Yuck.
Exits are Fore, Aft.
