Do you get tired of explaining it and simplify it for people down to one word....insurance, or consulting, or whatever?

I started to just say insurance and people kept complaining to me about wanting lower rates on car insurance....

Surprisingly less people comment about prices on their health insurance, I would have thought it be the other way around.

Like Han Solo, I've lost count. (I've been an actuary for nearly 20 years.)

I usually say that I'm a pension consultant or that I assist employers with their pension plans. If I feel like being expansive, I may explain that I am responsible for the complex mathematical calculations that determine how much money a company has to contribute to its pension plans.

And that's when they all scratch their heads and say, you like doing that kind of math?

That's because they write a check for their car insurance, so they are more sensitive to the premium.

Health insurance premiums are usually deducted from a paycheck, so most people don't really have a good idea how much they pay.

Very true...

In my case, being 21, I pay less for my health and dental coverage than I do for my car insurance each month.

It's a lose-lose scenario....as I get older (to a point) my car insurance will drop, but as I get older, my health coverage costs will go up.

Sometimes being responsible sucks....I just want to be independently wealthy and post on RF all day! Is that too much to ask for?!
